‘Atmospheric river’ from the tropics pours rain on Southcentral Alaska

Southcentral Alaska has been hit by an "atmospheric river" from the tropics, bringing heavy rain to the region. Cordova received as much as 5 inches of rain in just over two days, while Valdez received 2-2.5 inches and Portage logged more than 3 inches. A flood advisory was in effect for Cordova, where 3 inches of rain had fallen in 24 hours and another inch was expected. The weather system is part of a "very persistent and active pattern" of storm systems coming from the Sea of Japan and Aleutians, which includes the remnants of Hurricane Hector. More rain is expected in the coming days.
