July was Kotzebue's wettest month on record

Kotzebue, Alaska experienced its wettest month on record in July 2021, with 5.31 inches of total precipitation, beating the previous record set in August 1998. The heavy rainfall was caused by multiple storms moving through the area between two high pressure systems, bringing repeated rounds of rain. Other communities in Western Alaska also saw heavy rainfall in July, and as the Arctic gets warmer, more extreme weather patterns are expected to become more likely.
