Residents in flood zone should get well water tested, health officials advise

Residents in flood zones in Bells Corners, Ontario, have been advised to have their well water tested by Ottawa Public Health. Until the water has been tested, residents should use bottled, boiled or treated water for drinking and washing. Free water testing is available at two city-run facilities and at 17 locations across the city. Wells that have been flooded should be disinfected with household bleach before being re-tested for bacteria seven to 10 days later. Well pumps should also be checked for damage by a qualified technician. Septic systems should not be used if septic fields were under water, and residents should wash their hands after coming into contact with flood water.
