Glaciers in the Canadian High Arctic are melting at an unprecedented rate, according to research by Adrienne White, a glaciologist at the University of Ottawa. White studied satellite images of 1,773 glaciers on northern Ellesmere Island taken between 1999 and 2015, and found that more than 1,700 sq km of ice, or 6% of the total ice mass studied, had disappeared in just 16 years. White attributes the melting to warming air and ocean temperatures, and a lack of sea ice. She estimates that over half of the glaciers in the region are now susceptible to increased melting.
