Alaska Governor Bill Walker has declared a disaster in the far-north community of Utqiagvik, formerly known as Barrow, after a September storm caused severe damage to roads. The declaration gives the town access to state funds to repair damaged infrastructure, including roads, and for administrative and management costs. The storm caused more than $10m in damage, with at least one road destroyed and others seriously damaged. Seven historic and cultural sites were also damaged and submerged. State and federal emergency managers are assessing the damage and coming up with a more precise estimate.
