Fairbanks, Alaska is experiencing its most snowless start to winter in over a century, with no recorded snow as of October 16th. Warm weather across the state is also setting records for the latest freeze date on record. Brian Brettschneider, a climatologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, attributes the lack of snow to the temperature not being cold enough for it to snow, despite plenty of rain. Brettschneider also notes that while the climate is warming, there is still day-to-day and season-to-season variability, and that while Fairbanks has a perfect record of having a white Halloween, the scale is tipping more towards warmer and less snowy winters.
