The frozen Kuskokwim River in Alaska has been plowed to its longest length ever, creating a 355-mile ice road that allows for snowmobile and vehicle traffic in a region that otherwise relies on unpredictable airplane travel in the winter. The road was plowed by a crew led by Mark Leary and Tim Zaukar, who wanted to prove that it could be done. The road is particularly important for villages in the middle Kuskokwim area that don't have health clinics or a permanent health aide, as residents can now travel for healthcare needs without relying solely on flying. However, maintaining the road is a challenge for some villages, as they lack the funds to do so.
