Winter River Breakup

The Native Village of Kongiganak in Alaska experienced a winter river "break-up" for the first time in recent memory. The Environmental Coordinator, Roderick Phillip, made the observation. The Bethel Search and Rescue River Survey conducted an aerial survey of the Kuskokwim River to assess the ice jam below Kalskag and the rest of the river down to Bethel after an extended warm weather period. The survey was conducted on November 17, 2014.

Observation: Winter "Break-up" on the Kuskokwim River. We never had a winter river break up as far as I can remember. Roderick Phillip, Native Village of Kongiganak Environmental Coordinator
