Weather Effects Caribou Migration and Season

The article discusses how weather patterns affect the migration and behavior of caribou in Utqia vik, Alaska. The author notes that heavy rainfall led to an increase in mosquitoes, causing some caribou to stay near the ocean for relief. Additionally, the rainy summer resulted in an early berry season, with some people starting to pick berries in July instead of August. The article highlights the interconnectedness of weather, wildlife, and plant life in the region.

Observation: Up here, from what I hear and have experienced this summer, is that because it was raining so much there were so many mosquitoes that a lot of the tuttu (caribou) were staying near the ocean for relief. Our berries were early this year due to such a rainy summer. Some people started picking in July when usually it’s August or mid-August. Quinugan Roddy
