Matanuska River erosion threatens more homes

The Matanuska River in Alaska is causing erosion and threatening homes along its banks, with around 10 properties in Sutton in danger of being washed away. Property owners are struggling to figure out what to do if the river takes more of their land. The lack of attention from Mat-Su Borough and state officials has caused anger and frustration among residents, who have seen the disaster coming for years. The state removed several finger-like dikes a decade ago, which some complained were an eyesore, but the State Department of Transportation spokesman said the dikes are not the issue. The borough is completing a $1 million mapping study to better inform property owners and buyers about the risks the river poses.
