Hawaii’s rain from Hurricane Lane, topping 50 inches, is among most extreme in U.S. records

Hurricane Lane brought extreme rainfall to Hawaii, with over 50 inches measured in some areas, making it one of the most extreme rain events in US records. The Big Island was hit the hardest, with Mountain View recording 52.02 inches of rain, the second highest for a tropical storm or hurricane in the US since records began in 1950. Hurricane Harvey, which hit Southeast Texas last year, remains the wettest storm on record with a maximum rainfall of 60.58 inches. The heavy rain caused flooding, evacuations, and road closures, but Hawaii was spared the worst as the hurricane collapsed before hitting the islands.
