Congress has authorized plans for a deep draft port in Nome, Alaska, which has been in the planning stages for a decade. The port is expected to strengthen national security in the Arctic and reduce shipping costs, as well as provide economic benefits to the region. The project will cost $505.2 million, with the Army Corps of Engineers paying $378.9 million and the city of Nome responsible for $126.3 million. The Navy's new strategic plan, which focuses on Arctic presence, was announced at the same time as the port plans were approved.
