Polar bears are appearing in areas where they have never been seen before, including Summit Camp in Greenland, where a pack of polar bears recently attacked researchers and ate one of their dogs. A study released last year found that polar bear attacks on humans have historically been rare, but have increased in recent years due to declining summer sea ice caused by climate change. As sea ice continues to decline, polar bears are expected to venture into areas where they would not normally be found. Researchers are now implementing safety practices, such as carrying weapons and bear deterrents, at research sites in known bear country.
