Storm blasts Southcentral Alaska with wind gusts over 100 mph

A powerful storm system brought high winds and heavy rain to Southcentral Alaska on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, with wind gusts reaching over 100 mph in Anchorage. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center warned of high avalanche danger at all elevations in Turnagain Pass and smaller roof avalanches were possible due to warming temperatures and rain. Driving conditions were considered difficult on the Seward Highway past the junction with Hope due to ice and slush on the roadway. The National Weather Service advised travelers to have a winter survival kit with them if they must travel and to stay with their vehicle if they become stranded.
