GNWT identifies ‘wildfire hotspots’ in order to ‘seek and destroy’

Northwest Territories officials say multi-year drought conditions persist and could intensify wildfire risk as El Niño replaces La Niña, even though above-average snow accumulation in some areas may delay an early start to the 2026 fire season. GNWT crews have used infrared scanning on old fire perimeters to locate and extinguish remaining hotspots near several communities.
