The total catch volume of Pacific salmon in the district was 302.4 tons. This is almost 91% of the allocated volumes for three categories of fishing - industrial, amateur and traditional for community representatives. This is 11 times less than in 2022, a "non-pink salmon" year (even years are characterized by small approaches of this type of salmon).

Alaska's largest sockeye salmon run exceeded expectations in numbers but featured the smallest fish on record, posing challenges for commercial harvest.

Experts decided that during the fishing season, red fish in the water area of the Anadyr estuary can be caught only two days a week. It was decided to introduce a large number of passing days to preserve the chum salmon population spawning in this basin.

The plant, formerly owned by Peter Pan Seafood Company, is the economic engine for the Alaska Peninsula community. 

Residents in Western Alaska are experiencing a salmon crisis that is not only affecting their physical health due to the lack of exercise from salmon harvesting, but also their mental health and cultural well-being, as salmon harvesting is seen as a vital part of their way of life and recovery from substance abuse.

One theory is the pinks were traveling somewhere else to spawn, and taking a longer than usual route to avoid warming water.

As of July 21, fishermen in Bristol Bay’s five districts had harvested just more than 42 million salmon.

"Sockeye salmon harvest has been pretty constant for the last four years or so, but pink salmon has been oscillating," he said. "We were forecasting almost 70 million pink salmon harvest, and we had 40 million.
