A polar bear that killed a young mother and her baby last month in western Alaska was likely an older animal in poor physical condition.

Locals in Kotzebue showed a mix of excitement and concern over the weekend in response to reports that a rare polar bear was spotted in the area.

The man was injured on his face and hands. Two members in the skiers party assisted with his injuries and communicate for help in 15 degree temperatures with sunset approaching. It was not immediately clear what triggered the mauling about 10 miles northwest of Haines.

Although bears may hibernate for different lengths of time during winter, winter bear activity is an uncommon sight for Alaska Peninsula residents.

Possibly orphaned bear cubs are active during the winter when they should be hibernating.

Weather had been pouring rain and 45-degree temps for several days leading up to the sighting.
