Officials are warning that very low river flows and zero snowpack on Vancouver Island could stress salmon and other fish this summer. People are being asked to conserve water and avoid activities that can add pressure to fish already struggling in warm, low water.

The snowpack level on Vancouver Island is at 0 per cent of typical levels for June, according to the latest Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin released by the B.C. River Forecast Centre.

Low snowpack and falling lake levels have forced early reductions in Cowichan River flows as the watershed heads into a dry summer. Managers warn that additional cuts and even pumping may be needed if dry conditions continue.

Researchers warn Vancouver Island’s snowpack is far below normal, which could reduce summer and fall streamflows and raise water temperatures, stressing salmon and increasing the risk of juvenile die-offs.
