Extreme cold in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug led authorities in the Tazovsky District to cancel the Tazovsky–Gaz-Sale bus route for several days for passenger safety.

Whitehorse, Yukon nearly set its all-time March cold record on March 2, 2026, when the airport temperature dropped to -40.2 C. The cold snap is linked to entrenched Arctic air and a strengthened high-pressure ridge, with very cold temperatures expected to persist into mid-March.

A cold snap persisted in Norrbotten, Sweden, with overnight temperatures in Tornedalen and the Malmfälten region dropping to near −40°C. Pajala recorded −38.4°C, with several nearby locations also below −38°C.

Finland’s winter-to-date coldest temperature, -41.5°C, was recorded in Tulppio (Savukoski) on Thursday morning, while a nearby higher-elevation station measured -26.6°C. The Finnish Meteorological Institute attributes the difference to a strong surface temperature inversion under calm, high-pressure conditions.

In Nuuk, rain and above-freezing temperatures have melted most of the snow, delaying the opening of the city’s ski lift and cross-country ski trails. Operators say conditions are unusually poor for early January, leaving athletes and families without normal winter recreation options.

Unusually mild winter weather has affected Nuuk and much of Greenland’s west coast, with temperatures well above normal and periods of rain melting snow. DMI meteorologists in Nuuk describe a persistent high‑pressure pattern over the North Atlantic that has “locked” the weather into a warm regime.

DMI reports that January 2026 was the warmest January ever measured in Nuuk and across Greenland’s west coast, with Nuuk averaging 0.1°C—7.8°C above the 1991–2020 normal—and a peak of 11.3°C. Similar monthly temperature records were set in other towns, including Ilulissat, contributing to snow shortages and disruptions such as the Nuuk ski lift being idle.
