A large wildland fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in southern Greenland between Innaarsuup Qaava and Quassugaarsuaq, about 24 km from Qaqortoq. Local emergency services are using a helicopter to help extinguish the fire.

A large wildfire near Kangerluarsuk Ungalleq north of Sisimiut, Greenland, has been brought under control. Fire crews from Greenland and Denmark are working to extinguish it and prevent flare-ups, with dry conditions increasing the risk of new fires.

DMI reports that January 2026 was the warmest January ever measured in Nuuk and across Greenland’s west coast, with Nuuk averaging 0.1°C—7.8°C above the 1991–2020 normal—and a peak of 11.3°C. Similar monthly temperature records were set in other towns, including Ilulissat, contributing to snow shortages and disruptions such as the Nuuk ski lift being idle.

Nuuk has had such a mild November that early snow melted, with an average temperature of +1.9°C so far versus the normal -3.3°C, according to DMI. Colder weather with snow and frost is expected next week.

DMI reports that six record‐high spring temperatures were set across Greenland in spring 2025, including an unprecedented average of –24.8 °C at Summit Station and a 16.9 °C high in Nuuk.

This July was the warmest on record in nearly all of North and East Iceland. The average temperature was above 14°C at several weather stations, and no average monthly temperature in Iceland is ever known to have been higher.
