The South Klondike Highway in Yukon is closed for avalanche control due to a deeply buried weak layer causing large avalanches, while blizzard conditions with near-zero visibility are expected on the Dempster Highway, affecting travel and safety in the region.

The Yukon government is investigating a potential leak in a contaminated water storage pond at the Eagle Gold Mine, which is at a critical water level. The mine has been out of operation since a landslide in June 2024.

Officials with the Yukon government say dozens of dead fish found earlier this week in a creek near Victoria Gold's Eagle mine were likely killed by a discharge of contaminated water from the mine site.

Eighteen people have been flown out and other residents are on evacuation alert. 

Steve Buyck and Elizabeth Blair were out for a drive near Stewart Crossing, Yukon, this week when they spotted what they thought was a weasel. It was actually a red squirrel — completely white.

Way out side of typical range.

'This year especially there's been lots of reports of thin ice and open water in places where there hasn't been in previous years,' said James Connor of the Klondike Snowmobile Association.

The Yukon government has declared a state of emergency in the Mayo area, as a wildfire continues to threaten the community that was evacuated on Sunday.
