Hot, dry conditions and lightning sparked a wave of new wildfires in British Columbia, with firefighters battling 11 out-of-control blazes on Wednesday evening. Two of the new fires were south of Lillooet, including the Riley Creek wildfire, and another ignited between Whistler and Pemberton.

Ashcroft, British Columbia hit 40.8 C (105 F) on Sept. 3, setting the hottest September temperature ever recorded in Canada. A regional weather observer called the late-season heat highly unusual and linked it to a blocking high-pressure system.
