A strong cyclone brought storm-force winds up to 40 m/s to Chukotka’s Bering Sea coast, disrupting transport, damaging buildings, and causing power outages in several communities including Anadyr and nearby settlements.

Road services in Chukotka began preparing the regional “short” ice road across the Anadyr Estuary, rerouting it slightly to avoid a nearly 4 km stretch of pressure ridges. The 5.3 km crossing is planned to open by March 1, with current ice thickness on the fairway reported at 67 cm.

A late and uneven freeze-up on the Anadyr Estuary has delayed the seasonal ice-road crossings linking Anadyr with the airport area, as ice thickness and cracks are still unsafe for heavy equipment.

Municipal and utility services across Chukotka, including in Anadyr, switched to an intensified work режим to clear heavy snowfall brought by an Okhotsk Sea cyclone. Crews prioritized roads, social facilities and public-transport stops, removing over 5,000 cubic meters of snow in Anadyr in five days.

Thick, continuous ice up to 30–40 cm hindered docking of the cargo ship FESCO Moneron at the Port of Anadyr, with successful mooring only on a second attempt. Ice navigation has been declared since October 18, restricting entry to vessels of at least Ice 2 class.

A cyclone brought wet snow and wind gusts up to 28 m/s to Chukotka, causing power outages, water supply disruptions, and widespread flight delays. Ferry service across the Anadyr Estuary was suspended in the morning, with plans to resume service later in the day.

An eruption of ash from the Klyuchevskoy volcano prompted a red aviation alert and suspended flights between Kamchatka and Chukotka on August 11, 2025.

On July 26, storm‐force southeast winds gusting up to 19 m/s and light rain forced a temporary shutdown of seaport operations in Anadyr, delaying cargo unloading and canceling passenger ferry crossings.

The total recommended salmon catch for all types of fishing this year amounted to 1300.2 tons, which is 29% more than last year. Of these, 346 tons of pink salmon, 498.8 tons of chum salmon and 455.4 tons of sockeye salmon.

Scientists have documented an unusual mass death of walruses at a Chukotka rookery, with over 100 carcasses. In October, the rookery on Cape Serdtse-Kamen was occupied by walruses of the American group from Cape Point Lay, but their fatigue after a long passage through open water is thought to have caused the high mortality. This year, the number of walruses at the rookery was slightly more than 10 thousand individuals. In other years, scientists counted up to 100 thousand animals.

Dead seagulls were found near five coastal villages of the district - Ryrkaipia, Nutepelmena, Lorino, Lavrentiya and Enurmino. The largest number of dead birds were found near the village of Ryrkaipiy in the Egvekinot municipality. Local residents reported that there were several dozen Eastern Siberian gulls on the shore and ice floes.

A temporary ban on all salmon fishing has been implemented in Chukotka, Russia due to declining salmon populations.

A new study has warned of the risk to buildings in urban areas across Russia's permafrost zone caused by climate change. The Russian-US analysis says a worst-case scenario could lead to a 75-95% 'reduction in bearing capacity throughout the permafrost region by 2050'.

Due to declining salmon returns, Russia may halt commercial salmon fisheries next year to protect the species. Dead beluga whales and walruses have been found washed ashore in the estuary near the capital of Chukotka, with the cause of death currently unknown.

An executive order issued by President Biden extends the ban on Russian seafood imports to include products processed in other countries, closing a loophole from previous sanctions.

Fast ice has formed in the Anadyr Estuary near Anadyr, but a warm cyclone brought milder air and stronger winds, slowing ice growth and reopening a polynya in the central estuary. Hydrologists say the ice is still thin and unsafe, and thickness measurements will not start until at least January 10.
